Most Asked Questions

What information do I need to complete a Criminal Record Check?

You may be asked to provide information including your full legal name, former or alternate names where applicable, date and place of birth, and residential address history. Additional identity verification may be required depending on the screening method and applicable requirements.

How long will my Criminal Record Check take?

Eligible checks are commonly completed in an average of five minutes. Processing may take longer when identity verification, documentation, or additional review is required.

What does a Canadian Criminal Record Check search?

Triton works with police service partners across Canada to facilitate searches of the RCMP’s Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) criminal record database. A Canadian Criminal Record Check generally relates to records within Canadian systems and should not be considered a search of criminal history in other countries.

Is this the same as a Vulnerable Sector Check?

No. A Vulnerable Sector Check includes additional screening for eligible positions involving trust or authority over vulnerable people.

How can I check the status of my order?

Use Check Order Status to view the latest status of a background check you have already submitted.

How do I know which check I need?

Confirm the exact check with the employer, licensing body, volunteer organization, school, or other organization requesting it before placing your order.

Can I use this check for employment or licensing?

Criminal Record Checks are commonly requested for employment, licensing, placements, volunteering, and other personal requirements. Acceptance depends on the requesting organization’s policies.

What happens if more information is required?

You will receive instructions explaining any identity verification, documentation, or additional steps needed to continue your check.

What information can appear in my Social Media Check?

Your report reviews publicly available online content and may identify content within defined categories such as hate speech, threats of violence, toxic language, explicit imagery, drug-related content, bullying, or extremism.

Does Triton access my private social media accounts?

The Social Media Check is designed around publicly available online information. You should never provide a social-media password as part of an employment screening process.

Will every international check have the same turnaround time and price?

No.

Cost, turnaround time, documentation and processing requirements can vary significantly between jurisdictions.

Can a global watchlist search replace an international criminal record check?

Not necessarily.

Global watchlist and sanctions screening can provide valuable information and may complement international criminal screening.

Where a comprehensive criminal record check is legally and practically available, however, watchlist screening should not automatically be considered a replacement.

Are U.S. criminal checks the same as Canadian checks?

No.

Canadian criminal screening is typically national in scope.

In the U.S., screening may begin with an SSN trace to identify address history, followed by appropriate county, state and federal searches. National databases may supplement this process but are not generally sufficient as a standalone search because reporting and participation can vary.

Is there one international criminal database?

International criminal screening is jurisdiction-specific.

Record sources, access rules, documentation requirements and screening methods vary by country. Depending on the jurisdiction, screening may involve primary-source criminal searches, candidate-obtained police clearances, authentication or other available sources.
